The Northcote Shoe factory began in a small building in Eastment Street, Northcote, which expanded and purchased land on the corner of Arthurton Road and Helen Street, building a new factory in 1926. By the 1970s the factory was operating under the name of the Purnell Shoe Company.  Purnell Apartments place value in the idea of community, with the inclusion of several shared spaces throughout the building including a communal gym (L1), communal terrace on mezzanine and Vegetable patch (Level 1), and communal Barbeque Area on Level 3.
